What changed with Elijah? Before Elijah, every convert to the God of Israel had to come into Israel, and follow the Law. From Elijah onwards, the converts (e.g. widow of Zarephath, Naaman, Jonah’s Assyrians) did not have to come into Israel, nor keep the law. Faith and grace had replaced law. The fact that God was not in Elijah’s earthquake, wind and fire, but had been in Moses’s, showed that the old covenant with Israel had passed and a new covenant of faith had arrived.
